The World Economic Forum (WEF) has become a symbol of an authoritarian economic system that is driving the world into wars, social crises, and ecological crises. Big Tech companies are establishing a new power bloc in Davos: Their business model is based on surveillance, injustice, and the exploitation of people and nature worldwide.

But resistance is growing: We’re organizing ourselves through grassroots democracy, building networks, and standing up to them on the protest march to Davos! Together, we stand for a socially just world with democratic self-governance and for global climate justice! Our protest and our organizational approach are inspired by the World Social Forum (WSF), which was founded in 2001 as an alternative to the WEF, opposes imperialism, and creates a space for mobilization, networking, and discussion.

The educational and protest trip to Davos brings together around 100 people to critically examine the role of the World Economic Forum and the growing influence of Big Tech on the economy, democracy, and the climate. Through workshops, international networking, and protest actions, we develop and advocate for shared perspectives on social justice, economic democracy, and a climate-just world.

Schedule

Participation in individual events: You can participate in the entire program or in individual events. The latter are marked with “Individual registration possible.” To do so, please click “Mehr Infos” for the respective event and register there using the form.

Goals of the events: To ensure the educational trip is a success, there are several preparatory and follow-up sessions. Here, we’ll get to know each other, learn, network, and plan the trip and protest march. We’ve invited exciting speakers for many of the sessions.

Overview of the schedule: The first three events will introduce this year’s theme, and we’ll also share a bit about the educational trip. After that, the actual preparation period begins with the kick-off meeting. Press training and action training are additional offerings.

Participation for people outside Berlin: Since many participants are not from Berlin, we’re holding some sessions entirely online or (at times) in a hybrid format. However, since our methods often require in-person participation, the digital program has been scaled back somewhat. That’s why some sessions list two time slots.

Organizational Concept

Support Groups: In your support group, you’ll organize yourselves independently and look out for one another during the educational trip and protest march. These can be your friends or people you meet for the first time during the trip. The support group concept has proven effective in political actions over the past few decades.

House Group: At our Swiss accommodation, we’ll be staying in several houses, so you’ll also be part of a house group that’s jointly responsible for meals and the respective house.

Working Groups: Our educational trip is largely organized on a grassroots, democratic basis. That’s why there are several working groups you can get involved in. Each working group is supervised by at least one person from StrikeWEF North. You don’t need any special skills to participate; you can learn them along the way. Almost all working groups will also collaborate with the structures of the Swiss alliance StrikeWEF.

Tickets & Costs

When you register, you’ll receive our bank account information and can pay your participation fee. We’ll then send you the invoice and ticket number afterward. Only then will you have a confirmed ticket.

The price includes transportation, lodging, and meals. Please bring snacks for the bus ride and the hike, though.

Sliding Scale: Here’s our solidarity-based pricing system. We’d like to make solidarity spots and travel expenses available to people who are part of political groups in the Global South. If you don’t have any money right now, don’t let that stop you—just indicate in your registration that you need a solidarity spot.

By the way, it’s so affordable because many people are organizing the trip without pay. The solidarity buses are also driven by activists.

Accessibility (and accessibility improvements)

• Each bus has one wheelchair-accessible seat.
• The accommodations in Switzerland are not fully accessible. The dormitory has an accessible bathroom and dining room (door width at least 73.5 cm), but there are three steps leading to the bedroom.
• The lodging offers single, double, and shared rooms. If you need a single room or a double room with a close friend—for example, to have a private space—please indicate this on the registration form.
• During the hike, we’ll be staying in an accessible, heated gymnasium. This means that a large number of people will be sleeping in one room.
• The bus ride from Berlin to the lodging and back takes about 13 hours. There is no restroom on the bus. Breaks can be taken as needed.
• Individual sections of the hike can be skipped by taking the train if walking is too challenging.
• Most of the program is in German, but some parts are also in English. During in-person events, whispered translation into the other language can be arranged.
• We can accommodate food intolerances. We’ll ask about these before the trip.
• Children have joined the hike in recent years (please email us if you’d like to bring children). Childcare is not provided.
• Unfortunately, people under 18 are not permitted to participate without a legal guardian.

FAQs

How does communication within the group work? We’ll communicate via the Signal messenger in an internal group. That’s why we’ll ask for your Signal contact information on the registration form.

How many kilometers will we hike? Once the route is finalized, it will be posted on a separate subpage. It’s important to note that no special fitness level is required, and if the hike becomes too strenuous, you can take the regional train part of the way.

It’s cold in winter—what temperatures should I expect? That’s hard to predict. In our experience, daytime temperatures are usually around 0°C. In recent years, it’s often been sunny.

Will there be snow? So far, there’s always been snow. The depth has varied between 20 and 80 cm.

What should I pack? A customized packing list for the educational trip will be sent to all registered participants before departure.

If you’d like to register for just a single event, please do so using the registration form in the description for that specific event. By using this registration form, you’re signing up for the entire educational trip program, including all events before and after.
